Have you ever listened to a piece of music that instantly transported you back to a cherished memory? Or noticed how certain sounds can make you feel peaceful, emotional or uplifted?

Sound has an incredible ability to influence how we think, feel and experience the world around us.

Recently, I qualified as a Sound Healing Practitioner, and it has completely transformed both my personal wellbeing and the therapies I offer. Since qualifying, I’ve been incorporating sound healing into many of my holistic therapy and hypnotherapy sessions. I’ve found that the soothing vibrations help clients reach a deeper state of relaxation, allowing them to quiet the busy conscious mind and become more receptive during therapy.

The wonderful thing is… it relaxes me too!

My First Sound Bath Experience

I still remember my very first sound bath.

It was one of the deepest states of relaxation I have ever experienced. The only way I can describe it is that dreamy feeling of drifting off to sleep on a warm tropical beach, where every muscle in your body softens and your mind finally becomes still.

The crystal singing bowls, chimes, drums and gentle vibrations created an experience unlike anything I’d felt before. I felt my insides were experiencing massage.

From that moment, I knew I wanted to learn more about the healing power of sound.

Why Has Sound Been Used for Thousands of Years?

Sound healing isn’t a modern trend.

For thousands of years, indigenous tribes, ancient civilisations and spiritual traditions across the world have used chanting, humming, drumming, dance and movement, singing, bells, gongs and meditation as part of healing ceremonies and spiritual practice.

While each culture has its own traditions, they all recognised something we still experience today—sound has the ability to shift our emotional and physical state.

Modern research is now beginning to explore why.

How Sound Healing Supports Relaxation

Our lives are busier than ever.

Work deadlines, social media, family responsibilities and endless notifications often leave our nervous systems stuck in “fight or flight” mode.

One of the biggest benefits of a sound bath is that it encourages the body to move into the parasympathetic nervous system—often referred to as the “rest, digest and restore” state.

As the gentle sounds wash over you, many people notice:

  • Slower, deeper breathing
  • Reduced muscle tension
  • A quieter mind
  • A deep sense of calm
  • Improved sleep afterwards
  • Reduced feelings of stress and anxiety

Even people who find meditation difficult often discover that sound gives the mind something gentle to focus on, making relaxation feel effortless. A complete reset of mind, body and mood.

The Vagus Nerve and Sound Healing

You may have heard people talking about the vagus nerve recently, and for good reason.

The vagus nerve is one of the most important nerves in the body. It connects your brain with your heart, lungs and digestive system and plays a major role in regulating your nervous system.

When we’re calm and relaxed, our vagus nerve helps support healthy digestion, balanced heart rate and recovery from stress.

Although research into sound healing is still developing, practices such as humming, chanting, slow breathing and deep relaxation may help stimulate vagal activity, which could explain why many people leave a sound bath feeling calmer, lighter and more grounded.

Sound Healing and Brainwaves

Did you know your brain naturally changes frequency throughout the day?

When we’re busy working or concentrating, our brains spend more time in Beta brainwaves.

As we begin to relax, Alpha brainwaves become more dominant.

Deep meditation is often associated with Theta brainwaves, while deep restorative sleep occurs during Delta brainwaves.

Many sound healing sessions use slow, rhythmic tones that may encourage the brain to settle into these calmer states, making relaxation and meditation feel much easier.

What About Healing Frequencies?

One of the questions I’m asked most often is about healing frequencies.

You may have heard of frequencies such as 432 Hz, 528 Hz or 963 Hz, often referred to in spiritual communities as frequencies that promote harmony, transformation or higher consciousness.

During my own sound healing sessions, clients often tell me they see colours, experience emotional releases or feel vibrations moving through different areas of their bodies while I’m playing the crystal singing bowls.

These experiences are deeply personal and can feel incredibly meaningful. Although science hasn’t confirmed that individual frequencies have unique healing effects, many people find listening to them deeply relaxing and restorative.

Sound Healing and the Chakras

Many sound healing practitioners also work with the chakra system.

In Eastern traditions, chakras are described as energy centres within the body, each connected to different emotional, physical and spiritual aspects.

From the grounding energy of the Root Chakra to the spiritual connection of the Crown Chakra, sound is often used with the intention of bringing awareness, balance and harmony to these energy centres.

Whether you view chakras as symbolic, energetic or spiritual, they can provide a beautiful framework for mindfulness, self-reflection and personal growth.

You Don’t Need to Understand the Science to Feel the Benefits

Perhaps the most beautiful thing about sound healing is that you don’t need to understand every scientific theory to experience it.

Sometimes healing begins simply by giving yourself permission to slow down.

To breathe.

To be still.

To stop doing…

and simply listen.

In a world that constantly asks us to do more, achieve more and think more, a sound bath offers something incredibly rare—the opportunity to switch off from the outside world and tune back into yourself.

Experience a Sunday Sunset Sound Bath

These sessions are currently offered on a Pay As You Feel contribution basis because I truly believe everyone should have access to the opportunity to relax, restore and reconnect, regardless of their circumstances.

*Spaces are limited to keep the sessions intimate and peaceful.

Thank you for reading. If you found this article helpful, please share it on social media or forward the blog to someone who could benefit from a little more peace, relaxation and balance in their life.

Remember…

Sometimes the most powerful healing doesn’t come from doing more.

Sometimes it begins by simply listening.

Healthy wishes,
