If you have thought about trying to quit smoking, you are not alone.  Almost 7 out of 10 smokers say that want to stop.  Quitting smoking is one of the biggest things you can do for your health.

You may have turned to vaping, as this is being marketed as the gateway to quitting.

Today I am going to talk to you about the facts you need to know about vaping.

1. Vaping is safer than smoking but it is still unsafe.

E-Cigarettes heat nicotine (extracted from tobacco) flavourings and other chemicals to create an aerosol that you inhale.  While regular tobacco contains around 7000 chemicals, many of which are toxic, we know that e-cigarettes expose you to fewer toxic chemicals.

However, there is also an outbreak of lung injuries and deaths associated with vaping. As of January 2020, the CDC (Centres for Disease Control and Prevention) confirmed 60 deaths in patients with e-cigarettes vaping and associated product use.

The cases appear to predominately affect people who modify their vaping devices or use black market modified e-liquids.   This is especially true for vaping products containing THC (tetrahydrocannabinol)

The CDC recommends that people.

  • Do not use THC containing products.
  • Avoid obtaining your e-cigarettes and vaping devices from informal sources such as online dealers, friends, or family.
  • Do not modify or add any substances to a vaping device that are not intended by the manufacturer.

2. Vaping is bad for your heart and lungs as shown by emerging research:

There are still many unknowns about vaping, including what chemicals make up the vapour and how they affect our physical health over the long term.

Emerging data suggests that e- cigarettes are linked to chronic lung disease and asthma and cardiovascular disease.

Any foreign, toxic chemical inhaled into our body, into our fragile lungs is still ultimately carcinogenic and dangerous to all our organs and our health.

Although they have been marketed as an aid to stop smoking, e-cigarettes have not been approved by the FDA. Studies show that you are more likely to return to cigarettes combined with vaping.

3. E-Cigarettes are just as addictive as the traditional Cigarette.

Both e-cigarettes and regular cigarettes contain nicotine, which research suggests may be as addictive as heroin or cocaine.  The worry is that many e-cigarette users get even more nicotine that they would from a tobacco product, as you can buy extra strength cartridges, which have a higher concentration of nicotine, or you can increase the voltage of an e-cigarette to get a greater hit of the substance.

4. E-Cigarettes are not the best tool to stop smoking.

Vaping has been heavily marketed as an aid to help you quit smoking, despite having not received approval from the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) as a smoking cessation device.

A recent study found that most people who intended to use vaping as a tool to stop smoking ended up continuing to smoke both regular cigarettes and e-cigarettes.

The CDC advises adults to who use e-cigarettes to quit smoking outweigh the risks and the benefits and consider alternative options.

5. The younger generation is getting hooked on nicotine.

It is a worry that many young people are turning to vaping then moving onto cigarettes or both. It is a worry that a new generation is getting addicted to nicotine. 40% of young e-cigarette users have never smoked tobacco. And whilst vaping may be cheaper than smoking traditional cigarettes, it is still a major health risk.

In addition to the above, rather shockingly Diacetyl, Pentanedione and Formaldehyde found in e-cigarettes is also linked to cancer, bronchiolitis or “POPCORN LUNG” which is a deadly disease which causes inflammation, scaring and damage of the tiny air sacs within the lungs)

According to the CDC, Vaping also causes at least two types of pneumonia, (chemical and lipoid, both fatal.) as well as strokes.

There is no cure for popcorn lung apart from certain pharmaceuticals.

With lung health being focused so much now, any activity which will weaken the lungs makes an individual more at risk from infections and viruses.

Conclusion

My dad and sister came to Carrie a few months ago to finally stop smoking. My dad smoked 40/50 easy a day and my sister 20+ daily. They are both doing amazing, all these weeks without even craving a cigarette, Carrie did an amazing job. She’s so welcoming and friendly I would HIGHLY recommend. Thank you.”
